Fueled by Positivity, Sariah Shines in Middle School

Sariah, a 14-year-old student, attended Woods Lake Elementary School before joining Maple Street Magnet Middle School. She’s already making a name for herself as a leader and an active participant in her school community. When asked what she enjoys most about Maple Street, Sariah shared her appreciation for the teachers, especially Mr. Perry her Social Studies teacher. “He’s my favorite teacher,” she says. “He tells jokes and knows how to have fun.”

Sariah has been a part of the CIS After-school Program in 7th and 8th grade at Maple Street. “I really like that we can talk about what activities that we can have and be a part of during after-school,” she says. She enjoys the variety of projects, activities, and clubs that the program offers.

“It’s helped me get my grades up.”

For Sariah, the CIS After-school Program has played a huge role in her success. “It’s helped me get my grades up,” she says. She also enjoys the homework help provided, especially in subjects like Social Studies. “Ms. Shannon helps me with my homework and keeps me and other students on track,” she explains. Another mentor, Ms. Nikki [CIS site coordinator], is also someone Sariah looks up to. Sariah says, “She’s, my bestie! We talk about a lot of different things together and I feel comfortable with her.”

“We talk about a lot of different things together and I feel comfortable with her.”

Outside of school, Sariah has a variety of hobbies, such as sleeping (who doesn’t love a good nap?), playing with her siblings, reading (she enjoys romance and non-fiction books), and helping in the kitchen. Her favorite is making ramen noodles and grilled cheese sandwiches. She also enjoys expressing her creativity through painting!

Her biggest accomplishment this school year is passing her NWEA math test; showing her commitment to academic growth. When it comes to the future, Sariah has a range of exciting career aspirations. She dreams of becoming a race car driver, imagining the thrill of winning trophies and driving fast cars. She’s also interested in nail design and jewelry making, showcasing her creative and artistic side.

If Sariah had to describe Communities In Schools in one word, she’d choose “cool.” Her favorite word right now? “Bro.”

Here at CIS, we believe that behind every successful student is a caring adult. For her, that person is her mom. “She loves me, takes care of me, and spends time with me,” Sariah says. Sariah’s story is a testament to the impact of Communities In Schools and the role of after-school programs in shaping students’ futures. With her determination, leadership, and creativity, she’s well on her way to achieving her dreams!

The CIS after school program is supported by federal dollars awarded through the Michigan Department of Education, the 21st Century Community Learning Centers. These materials were developed under a grant awarded by the Michigan Department of Education in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential.
